The Plymouth was designed by Virgil Exner, who created the “forward look” for the whole Mopar lineup. There were two problems: first, they were unibody construction; and second, they rusted like crazy. That’s why there are so few of them vs the GM and Ford cars of the era, which were body on frame.

I declare… It’s a thing they handed down to their kids and grandkids. Cars are becoming cloned they all look the same in city traffic. At least a lot more than they used to.
Used to, you could tell different car makers. And it’s getting harder and harder to do that now. That’s why classic cars will always hold their value. They truely were from a different mold.

Interesting that Chevy seems to be the fan favorite over the years, but Ford outsold Chevy 1955 through 1957.

There are parts of the Ford that I like and parts of the Plymouth that I like but the Chevy has its design nailed down perfectly for the year. Simply gorgeous from all angles and in and out. GM had the most artistic eye for many years IMO

I think that’s a sacraligous thing to say in a classic car sub. I know the whole design concept at that time was largely influenced by the space race which is why you saw wings galore, but for those who are keen on brands, especially domestics, can see the difference.
The design cues also reign in on what is universally appealing and a sign of the times. For cars in the 2010s where you saw legislation for further rollover protection with strengthening of the A – C Pillars and a larger demand for crossovers, you begin to see a lot of cars with an egg like shape.

Fun fact, the General Motors space age design was heavily inspired (almost stolen) from Chrysler in the late 50s when a gm employee got a peek at a Plymouth in testing

The designers made the shapes flow from year to year. Fins for example and fenders. Making dies to stamp sheet metal was not a quick process and plans were made years in advance. Look at the Chevrolets from big change at 1954 into the flow through 55s-56s-57s-58s and into the 60s.
